What is Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) seeks to restore hormonal balance. Treatment involves supplementing one or more of the following bio-identical hormones: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, or DHEA; of which all are identical to the ones normally produced by the human body. These hormones are derived from plant sources and processed to create hormones that molecularly mirror what the human body naturally makes.

Hormones fluctuate in various stages in a person’s life. If left uncorrected, hormonal imbalances can lead to problems such as: Osteoporosis, increased risk for cardiovascular disease, hot flashes, night sweats, decreased sex drive, weight gain, fatigue.

High-stress lifestyles, high processed food diet, and decreased exercise can contribute to imbalances, regardless of age and sex.

**Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy is not recommended for every patient and can carry significant side effects if prescribed and/or taken in an unbalanced manner. These effects can include blood clots, stroke, and certain kinds of cancer, among others. Balance is key to successful BHRT; balance between hormones, lifestyle, and nutrition. BHRT is not a cure-all, however, when utilized in tandem with good nutrition, regular exercise, and stress reduction, patients have reported that BHRT can significantly contribute to overall good health.

1. See a provider.

A provider’s prescription is required to receive BHRT. Therefore, it is important to ask your provider if they prescribe BHRT, or are willing to work with one of Gardens Pharmacy’s BHRT specialists. We can help you find a willing provider if you need guidance. (Insurance typically does not cover compounded BHRT prescriptions. The number of prescriptions will depend on your individual hormonal needs).

2. Baseline labs are required.

Saliva kits are available through our pharmacy to measure baseline hormones. Recommended labs include: Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA, Thyroid [TSH, Free T3, Free T4, TPO, TBG], Ferritin, Vitamin D, SHBG, and Magnesium levels.
